Concert cellist Louka is a concert cellist is a middle-aged Czech man dedicated to bachelorhood and a huge lady`s man who also struggles to make a living after losing his place in the state orchestra. To make ends meet, he plays at funerals and paints tombstones, but he runs up a large amount of debt. His friend offers him a chance to earn a lot of money through a sham marriage to a Russian woman so that she can continue living in Czechoslovakia. The woman then uses her new citizenship to emigrate to West Germany, where her boyfriend lives, living behind her five-year-old son Kolya with Louka. Though at first the two are unable to communicate as they don`t speak each other`s languages but gradually, they form an unlikely bond.
