Emmy regular "Game of Thrones" may not be returning in contention to defend its “title”, but we are actually blessed with these equally fierce and prestigious TV shows.
This year’s Emmys, we have NBC’s “This Is Us”, Netflix’s “The Crown”, “House of Cards" and “Stranger Things”, Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”, HBO’s “Westworld”, and AMC’s “Better Call Saul” vying for Best Drama. The race has never been this unpredictable and exciting!
The odds favor the new shows indeed! But knowing which is which among these nominees is a one tough nut to crack. What we all know so far is “Stranger Things”dominated the PGAs and the SAG Awards, while “Westworld” received 22 Emmy nominations.
As for “The Crown”, Netflix is not shy from revealing they have spent millions for the show about the rise of Queen Elizabeth II, specifically the efforts made to produce exquisite costumes and extravagant locations. Dystopian drama “The Handmaid’s Tale” is also known for its costumes but what truly makes it stand out is its relevant story – so relevant to today’s social issues that one could see it really happen on Earth in the near future.
Meanwhile, family drama “This Is Us” makes the competition even more interesting. Each plot twist will keep you on edge but this doesn’t make it hard for any viewer to get into the show because the characters (and their journey) are so relatable.
Bet on these new shows or stick to those that already have a winning streak. Your call!
Hosted by Stephen Colbert, the 69th Emmy Awards will be held live on September 17 at 5PM at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
